DEBATE: IS CONTINUAL GLOBALISATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCE HAVING AN ADVERSE AFFECT UPON NOT JUST CULTURES AND RELIGIONS BUT UPON OUR IDEALS AND FUTURES?
IS CONTINUAL GLOBALISATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCE HAVING AN ADVERSE AFFECT UPON NOT JUST CULTURES AND RELIGIONS BUT UPON OUR IDEALS AND FUTURES?
Globalisation has increased the frequency and magnitude of terrorism
Technological advance has allowed us to be able to create very effective ways of killing large numbers of our species, and with the means of transporting such weapons. Religions brought together will inevitably highlight differences and give rise to more fundamentalist factions.
As cultures are able to adapt, yet remain the same and accept one another there exists a beautiful divergence in cities as different ideals and cultures live side by side, with people freely moving from one area to the other and likely to understand, not fear something because it is different. There is no better way to accept another culture than by experiencing it first hand.

Convergence of cultures makes them lose their uniqueness
As cultures interact with one another, there is some trade off as parts of one are incorporated into the other (eg the German language now includes many English words). This can be interpreted that the value and uniqueness of a culture is under threat and the world will move towards one culture in the future. A lack of diverseness would weaken us as a species.
Surely diversity of culture in its various forms are the root psychological explanations of conflict between ethnicities and civilisations. If one group is not jealous of another group because they share similar attributes a cause of conflict between parties is eliminated. Uniqueness of culture is something to treasure, however by aligning certain aspects of culture, war and conflict in the future can be avoided by making it irrational to resort to violence. One only has to look at the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community in the early 1950’s that first linked the German and French economies making sure that war in western Europe became a thing of the past. This has of course developed into a European Union where a European identity is starting to emerge as a conglomerate of European countries, yet at the same time each individual identity is preserved within this structure (just look at Britain and France). Globalisation is affecting our cultures, but it is developing them in a harmonious way so as to strengthen and unite our species.

Technology and globalisation stop for noone
Our own persuit to better our technology is coming at costs which we cannot even see and calculate at the present. There might come a time when we wished we were more cautious.
Cultures and Religions are already trying to adapt to the modern day already and have been doing so for as long as the human race has progressed. With each level of progress, we can still find meaning from religion and our own cultures. Yes the changes will effect our futures but it will be beneficial, and we are not losing our cultures or religions which previously defined us.

Globalisation and technology are designed to better our lives.
Technology is not always a ‘development’; whilst it may improve some areas, the overall effect of new technologies might be regree society. For instance, it could be argued that new communication technologies actually limit human interaction and retard the development of social skills, even though they have benefits for business and long distance travel.
With new technology come new ideas, all coming from our increasing intellect. It is in our nature to strive to improve and develop new things, which can only be seen as a good thing. Forcing ourselves to develop and a slower speed would be going against our basic instincts.

Multicultural societies, not xenophobia, are the product of increased globalisation
Anyone who has ever lived in a ‘multicultural society’ will tell you that this is a very rose-tinted picture. The fact is, as conflicting cultures are forced to live alongside one another a great deal of mutual suspicion and mistrust can arrive, especially in places where resources are limited and there is competition for money and jobs. An appreciation and respect for other cultures can only be achieved through education, and society has not reached a point yet where this is taking place. Globalisation does not automatically make us more accepting.
