Debatewise debate DEBATE: THIS HOUSE BELIEVES IN 'BRO'S BEFORE HOS'.

The trials and tribulations of the human heart are at once universal and universally boring. Almost every relationship endures the same set of problems, which is why it is so curious that no one has found the map for definitively navigating the most nagging gripe of the modern S.O. -- me...or your friends? Dudes- is your first obligation to your buddies (who have supported you through endless food fights and maybe fist fights, marathon sessions of madden 05 (arguably the best madden due to the introduction of the hitstick), and, yeah sure, the occasional break-up) or your woman? Ladies- do your girlfriends take primacy (who have been there through bust ups and break ups, spent hours dancing into the night with you in extraordinarily high heels and been on call through that most socially turbulent of times: second year) or your boyfriend?

Friends stay, lovers leave

When it comes to a choice between bros and hos you have to choose your bros. They’ve been there for you before, they’ll be there for you again. They pick you up, make you laugh, help you out and see you right. They are loyal, trustworthy and kind. They’ll tell you the truth and will look after your back.
Lovers have little loyalty, they let you down, disappoint you and do you wrong. They don’t really care about you, just themselves. Many of the things they do are designed to get you to like them more. And when you really need them you can be sure they won’t be there.

Friends are an important part of life and they will be around much longer than most relationships…but the key word there is ‘most’. There are some partnerships which outlast your friendships, where your lover becomes (no gagging, now) your best friend. For many, a marriage or long term relationship will be the most enduring connection they experience, bringing them deeper levels of commitment than transient friendships which last for a few years and then fizzle out. Yes, relationships fail, but often so do friendships.

Friendships are based on things you have in common: relationships are just sexual chemistry

Friendships last a lifetime because they are built up slowly, through shared passions and experiences. We choose our friends because of what they bring to our lives and how they make us feel about ourselves. Relationships, on the other hand, usually come into being because of some primitive chemical spark- they are less a ‘choice’ than an impulse. Once the initial rush of hormones fade, there isn’t really much left to work with, which is why so many couples split up after a few months, or years if they’re lucky.
Why would you put someone you find attractive because of some inexplicable evolutionary instinct before the people that you have a genuine emotional and intellectual bond with?

Love is so much more than just sexual attraction: it’s what happens when the compatability of a great friendship meets that spark of passion. While your friends enrich your life and make you who you are, those relationships can never live up to the passionate relationship you have with a partner.
