DEBATE: SHOULD OBAMA HAVE CHOSEN HILARY AS HIS RUNNING MATE?
SHOULD OBAMA HAVE CHOSEN HILARY AS HIS RUNNING MATE?
It was very close between Hilary and Obama in the first place
Hillary Clinton came second in one of the closest primary races in history, garnering almost 18 million votes in the process. Given that the primaries had been so close and her supporters wanted her to be Vice – President, Obama should have given her more consideration.
.
I think the Demoncrats, intelligent enough to have had consultations with Obama, Hillary and others, made the intelligent choice:
As much as I love and supported Hillary, I think the Rotten Right would have had a field day bashing the Obama/Hillary ticket. Already, just about all the media, including CNN (Lou Dobbs especially) and even MSNBC, not to mention the anti-Liberals O’Reilly and Hannity, had been denigratig Hillary regularly. The Right would have gone full throttle with their lies about Hillary. So far, they have been so busy lying about Obama, they haven’t had too much time to attack Biden. By now, Hillary would have been practically lynched by the despicable Right.
I’m praying that Republicans will finally be thrown out of the White House. Hillary would make a good Secretary of State. As someone said, "the world is waiting to love America again." President Obama and Sec. of State HR Clinton can make that happen.

Obama needs the votes of Clinton supporters
Barack Obama needs those who voted for Hillary Clinton in the primaries to vote for him in the Presidential election. Prior to Hillary’s speech to the Democratic convention, a poll found that only half of her supporters were definitely going to vote for Obama. The Clinton supporters represented a different wing of the Democratic Party that was relatively impervious to Obama’s message. In order to win over her supporters, Obama ought to have offered Clinton the Vice – Presidency as a demonstration of her and their importance
SHOULD OBAMA HAVE CHOSEN HILARY AS HIS RUNNING MATE?
Clinton would have brought the experience Obama needed to the ticket, as well as debate skills.
Clinton has racked up an excellent reputation in the Senate on some topics that would have helped Obama just as much as Joe Biden’s. However, she has more name recognition than Biden, isn’t as apt to misspeak or ramble, is an excellent debater. She has travelled widely to represent the United States as First Lady, and has been an observer during all sorts of foreign policy discussions and decisions.
SHOULD OBAMA HAVE CHOSEN HILARY AS HIS RUNNING MATE?
Clinton would not have been a traditional choice of running – mate
Biden wasn’t a traditional choice either (small Democratic state). Yes, it’s true that Clinton did not make foreign policy decisions, but watching it all happen from the closest vantage point, hearing the pros and cons, traveling throughout the world meeting and speaking with government officials, and then—as an addition, serving on the powerful committee on the military certainly puts her on an equal with Joe Biden. However, Joe Biden did not get 18 million votes, and his name is not known to about half the American public. Hillary Clinton is a name known by everyone.
Vice – Presidents are often chosen to either win a swing – state or to provide experience in an area where the putative President is lacking. On the one hand, Clinton is a senator from New York, a strong Democrat state; while on the other, is a junior Senator without any major foreign policy experience. Of course, Clinton was also the First Lady 1992 – 2000 but this does not automatically confer foreign policy experience, whatever she argued on the campaign trail.
SHOULD OBAMA HAVE CHOSEN HILARY AS HIS RUNNING MATE?
Bill Clinton would have had too much influence
If Obama doesn’t have the ‘across the aisle" diplomatic skills to handle Bill Clinton, how can he use these skills to run the country? Bill and HIllary Clinton are good citizens and good Democrats. Bill Clinton would have probably been happy to have been given an informal diplomatic position to represent the US as he did for Bush during the Tsunami. Or, he could have been appointed to the UN position. Hillary Clinton could have worked on Health Care and children’s issues, just as Al Gore worked on government efficiency.
And with Hillary in the VP slot, I doubt Sarah Palin would have ever been chosen.
Hillary Clinton explicitly campaigned on the slogan of “vote one get two” during the primaries, a reference to Bill Clinton. If Obama selected Hillary, former President Bill Clinton would undoubtedly have been involved. As a former President he would have been able to exercise undue, unelected, informal power in any Democrat administration. A Clinton Vice – Presidency would have been difficult to include in a Obama Presidency.
The enmity created during the Primaries would have made it difficult for Obama and Clinton to work together. Both Bill Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro, a close Clinton supporter, were accused of racism during the Primaries and Clinton herself brought up the spectre of Obama’s assassination. Following such a vitriolic campaign, distrust between the two candidates would have made the Presidential campaign difficult.

Message Conflict
And how did Joe Biden (and I like him—he was my second choice) represent change? With the choice of Joe Biden, all the arguments listed against Hillary make no more sense. Certainly HIllary does represent one kind of change: She is a woman. That is a huge change, at least for women like me.
The central message of the Obama campaign, “Change” would conflict with a Clinton Vice – Presidency. Obama’s message and appeal is related to his distance from the ideological politics of the 20th Century. Hillary Clinton as Vice – President would have signalled a shift back to the politics of the Clinton administration 1992 – 2000 that contained the attempted impeachment of Bill Clinton and “Hillarycare”. Obama’s message is based on a shift away that would only have been muddied by Clinton’s participation.
