Debatewise debate DEBATE: HAS JOHN MCCAIN GONE TOO FAR?

The Republican candidate and his VP nominee have been accused of whipping their crowds into a frenzy. With the audience shouting such things as "terrorist" and "off with his head" has the campaign gone too far?

McCain is not running a ‘respectful campaign’

Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but despite all the sniping and the under-hand comments, surely hard-working Americans want a President and Vice-President who do not use race as a way to get to the top. Shouldn’t the possible President of the United States of America be respectful of his fellow candidates? I guess not.
McCain promised repeatedly that he wouldn’t campaign this way. And he said that when politicians campaign that way, it shows how little vision they have of the future. (1)
Ok, so it is expected for those involved to pick holes in the others’ campaign and maybe even their personality, but McCain is letting his campaign go too far and allowing race to become an issue in a country so often divided by racism.

When have campaigners ever run respectful campaigns? It is their job to rip the other apart. Obama has even made references to McCain’s age, referring to him and his mind as ‘erratic’. (1)

Associates think this is the wrong way to campaign

So many of McCain’s and Palin’s associates are coming to the fore and commenting that McCain and his campaign have stepped over the line. Mark Salter, McCain’s long-serving chief of staff, is understood to have told campaign insiders that he would prefer his boss to suffer an ‘honourable defeat’ rather than conduct a campaign that would be out of character – and likely to lose him the election. (1) That both McCain and Palin are willing to go to such extremes to win the election is a disturbing look inside the mind of people who are close to assuming the office of the President and Vice President.

It is not up to McCain’s associates to tell him what he is doing right and wrong. John McCain should know where his campaign is going and should be within his own control, not others.

McCain’s efforts began the terrorist talk

The crowd gathering at the McCain-Palin rallies cannot be solely blamed for talk of Obama being a terrorist. The McCain campaign began running a new television ad criticising Obama for his relationship with Bill Ayers: the two are not close friends but once served together on a charity board and are neighbours in Chicago.
Ayers was a founder of the violent Weather Underground group during the Vietnam War era. “When convenient, he worked with terrorist Bill Ayers,” the ad says. “When discovered, he lied.” (1) By implying Obama was associating with terrorists, the implication is that he himself was one. This took the campaign too far.

The ad does not specifically imply that Obama is a terrorist. It is merely trying to state that he works with some one who has terrorist connections. The public can make several conclusions from that.
It is widely understood that politicians take snide digs at each other; they use any material they can. The benefit of this is that any piece of information is brought to the public table so the voter has a full picture when they come to vote. This poster may have been joking about Obama’s connections, they may have been simply highlighting that Obama is willing to work alongside inconspicuous individuals, and they are entitled to do so.

McCain will go to any lengths to win

Race, religion, neither age nor sex should come into the underhand comments. Pick on the stupid things that are said, the crazy promises that are made and nutty family members. Do not pick on something that you will forever regret. Contributing to this, the mob mentality is not getting John McCain any closer to presidency. Last week, Obama was still enjoying an average eight point lead over McCain. (1)

John McCain and Sarah Palin are campaigning for arguably the most important and responsible jobs in the world. It is a coveted position that many young Americans should be aspiring too! Many would do almost anything to win. John McCain and Sarah Palin are just two examples of this. So what if they have to make a few underhand comments about religion or the colour of Senator Obama’s skin? If it will get a few voters onside, perhaps it has to be done.

McCain has tried to stem the flow

Unfortunately, it is too little too late. The damage has already been done. McCain has certainly offended Obama and his supporters and those who are yet to decide. McCain was speaking in New Mexico on the 7th of October, doing his usual personal attack on Obama and McCain asked the crowd “Who is Barack Obama?” and immediately he heard someone yell “Terrorist”. McCain paused, the audience laughed and McCain continues on, not acknowledging, not chastising, not correcting. It has gone too far.

McCain has admitted that the campaign has got out of control. At a rally in Lakeville, Minnesota, the Arizona senator did become angry when he was booed for calling Obama ‘a decent person’. He took the microphone from an elderly woman who said she disliked Obama because he was an ‘Arab’. McCain was heard saying: “No, ma’am, no ma’am”. (1) His campaign has not gone too far because he has attempted to stop all the craziness during his rallies.

It is not McCain’s fault who attends the rallies

The audience at an event usually reflects on the character of the speaker. If McCain made it clear that racists and Islamophobes were not welcome at his events, or as part of the Republican party, would they still be there? The truth is that McCain has done nothing to dispel the hatred of the ‘crazy people’ who spout racism: indeed, he has encouraged it.

A reporter went to Ohio to work out the full story on the McCain-Palin mob. His findings were that it was no wonder that the slightest incitement from Sarah Palin or John McCain will turn one of their rallies into a lynch mob. The camera was rolling for literally seconds before people were happily commenting that Barack Obama is a terrorist. (1) Videos such as this have broken out onto the internet and have received millions of hits. It is not McCain’s fault that the slightest thing said at the rallies makes the crazy people go completely mental and shout offensive things.
